Augusta’s groundbreaking Second Chance Conference and Job Fair, “Building Bridges to a Brighter Future,” was held on April 17, 2024, at Helms College. I am proud to that ReNforce was the leading organization behind the successful conference.

As the Executive Director of ReNforce, an organization deeply committed to rehabilitating and reintegrating justice-impacted individuals, this conference highlighted the important role that our programs and advocacy efforts play in our region’s workforce development. Most importantly, it was a transformative opportunity to support and advocate for those seeking a second chance.

This event wasn’t just a gathering—it was a beacon of hope and opportunity, offering a platform for dialogue, resource sharing, and direct employment prospects. At ReNforce, we recognize the complex challenges that justice-involved individuals face, and our approach is as comprehensive as it is compassionate. We are committed to providing holistic support that addresses these unique needs.

From workshops covering essential skills like interview techniques to panel discussions on reentry reform and advocacy, the conference exemplified our dedication to equipping individuals with the tools they need to succeed. Moreover, the job fair provided a direct pathway to employment, enabling attendees to showcase their skills and potential to prospective employers.

However, despite the strides made at the conference, the absence of participation from more local businesses highlights the persistent stigma and discrimination faced by justice-impacted individuals. This strengthens our commitment at ReNforce to continue advocating for inclusivity and second chances in the community.

As ReNforce’s founder, I am personally committed to working tirelessly to break down barriers and create a more supportive and understanding environment for justice-impacted individuals in Georgia. Through collaborative efforts with local businesses, nonprofits, and educational institutions, we aim to foster a culture of empathy and opportunity where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Consider this: According to recent statistics, approximately 60–75% of justice-involved individuals remain unemployed a year after release. Yet, within this statistic lies untapped potential and opportunity. At ReNforce, we know that this journey requires all of our community. We invite local businesses to join our efforts  by committing to inclusive hiring practices, considering the skills and potential of justice-impacted individuals.

Stay tuned for our Lunch and Learn Business Edition, where we dig  deeper into the benefits of hiring justice-impacted individuals. Interested businesses are encouraged to connect with ReNforce to explore this opportunity further. Let’s rewrite the script together, recognizing the humanity and value within our community.
